Welcome to Brussels Public School

I extend a warm welcome to students and parents of Brussels Public School for the 2011-2012 school year. Brussels P.S. is a small community school located in the village of Brussels, in the northern part of Huron County. Our school enrolment is just over 200 students from JK to Gr. 8. We have 11 teaching staff, 1 Educational Assistant, .5 Technical Resource Assistant, 1 custodian and 1 secretary.

We have a dedicated, talented and energetic staff committed to fostering ongoing growth and improvement, both academic and social, in the members of our school community. We do this by providing a range of learning opportunities, school trips, and extracurricular activities (sports teams, clubs, band, committees, etc.) to enhance our students’ intellectual, emotional, and social development. Many of these opportunities require additional funds, and so we will be engaged in a number of fundraising initiatives this year to provide the fullest, most enriching school experience possible for our students.

We are committed to improving the literacy and numeracy skills of our students. In keeping with a board-wide initiative, we will focus on improving students’ skills in the area of non-fiction writing. We will, of course, continue to work at improving student achievement in all areas, with a culture of high expectations and a focus on a collaborative approach to learning that provides a network of support designed to ensure success for all learners.

The principles of Character Education form an important foundation for all learning, and we strive to model for our students and integrate into the curriculum traits such as honesty, integrity, caring, responsibility and perseverance. We believe that students thrive and learn best in a safe, secure environment where they receive support from the school, the home, and the community. Parent involvement and community support is essential to a child’s school experience, and we welcome parent involvement and volunteers. Any parents or guardians who wish to volunteer in the school, and/or be part of the School Council, are encouraged to contact the school office for further details.
Communication between and amongst those responsible for a child’s education is an important factor and we encourage regular, open communication between home and school. We will provide information through monthly newsletters and student planners, and parents & guardians are encouraged to call or e-mail staff with any concerns or questions.
